5 Easy Steps To Finally Cleaning Out Your Closet

If there’s one thing we’re all too familiar with, it’s a disorganized closet. It’s always a good idea to do a deep cleaning of your closet at least twice a year, for your own sanity. There’s likely a bunch of items you haven’t worn in a while (or have yet to wear!), and then there are those that just don’t fit your personal style anymore—it happens. I’ve listed the steps I follow for when it comes time to clean out my own closet, which I’m currently doing for fall! Take a look and let me know your own tips in the comments section.

Get Organized

I totally understand that cleaning out your entire closet can be stressful, so step number one is to get organized. Clear out your calendar and make time to do this the right way, because it’s going to take hours, if not a full day. You’ll want to stock up on some new hangers, in-closet storage options, shoe racks, etc. The point is to be even more organized once your closet is cleaned out, so take care of this step beforehand.

Lay It Out

This is the fun part. To remove everything from your closet, it’s probably best to do it sections. Start with outerwear, then move on to tops, bottoms, and lastly shoes. By laying out your items, you’ll get a clearer version of what’s actually in your closet, and it will make the entire process easier.

Separate Your Forgotten Items

We’re all guilty of this. If you notice that there are a few items you have yet to wear or haven’t worn in a very long time, separate them from the rest. Pieces that are worn regularly clearly have your attention for a reason, so keep them away from those sadly forgotten ones. Now it’s time to be the judge and move on to the next step.

Delegate

This is where you decide what you’re keeping and what you’re tossing. Those forgotten items mentioned above will likely never see the light of day, and you’ll probably want to consider getting rid of them. There are also likely a bunch of pieces in your closet that no longer fit your style, and may be best to move on from. If you’re not a fan of how something physically fits you anymore, it’s time to get rid of it instead of holding on. All of your favorites and sentimental pieces should go right back into your closet, especially if you have zero doubts about keeping them.

Sell/Donate

What you do with your clothes once your closet is cleaned out is entirely up to you. Do some research and find locations that allow you to re-sell your things or donate them. Make sure these items aren’t damaged or too worn out because nobody will accept them if they are.
